Gloriana

Phyllida Lloyd's production of Benjamin Britten's opera "Gloriana" - originally written for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 - centres on the passionate relationship between Elizabeth I and the Earl of Essex, within the backstage context of the performance, and the relationships and emotions of the opera company and the stars. The film, which is accompanied by Britten's music, combines scenes from the Opera North performance with material filmed on a single camera onstage, behind the scenes staged material and sequences shot on a studio stage. The film presents a new slant on presenting opera for television.
