Gian Carlo Menotti
Gian Carlo Menotti, now in his 90th year, was celebrated in the 40s and 50s for his hugely popular operas staged on Broadway, "The Medium" and "The Consul", as well as his Christmas opera for children,"Amahl and the Night Visitors". Born in Italy, he has spent most of his life in the United States, but, in the 70s, moved to a mansion in Scotland, where he is interviewed by conductor Charles Hazlewood. Menotti talks about his theories of opera and his belief in melody, and discusses the famous Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds, which he founded in 1958. Performances are featured from the 2000 Festival, including some of Menotti's rarely heard orchestral music.
