Faust contre MéphistoFaust vs Mephisto
In the thirties, German science dominated the world : Carl Bosch (1874-1940) in chemistry, Adolf Butenandt (1903-1995) in biology, Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976) in physics, were its three emblematic figures. By choosing to remain in Germany after 1933, were these three men, all approaching the apex of their careers, going to make a pact with the devil as Faust had done ? Rare archival footage, commented by science historians, casts a light on the compromises of the German scientific community with the Nazi regime. The course of each of the protagonists is an example by which we can retrace the history of science under the Third Reich.
