Enrico l'AndalouEnrico
A documentary about how Enrico Macias renewed contact with the classic Algerian music of his youth. The course of Macias, who at the time of Algerian independence became the most famous eastern singer, reassembles the fragments of a life : an adolescence bathed in the Andalusian musical milieu of his native Constantine, the violent break with his home town and the exile to an unfamiliar France, the encounter with the North African artists of Paris and his rise to stardom in French popular chanson. Macias also evokes the legend of a Maalouf of Constantine, his mentor and father-in-law Cheikh Raymond Leyris, whose murder in June 1961 led to the massive exodus of Jews from eastern Algeria.
