Dichterliebe

A Story of Blue and Red

In a flow of subdued red light, Christine Schäfer sings Robert Schumann's "Dichterliebe" in an intimate night club in Berlin. Lieder are sung here, as in Schumann's times, only for a very small audience where emotions flow freely over short distances. In between the night club scenes, the film shows the film crew, talking about love and music. Everyday lives and the romantic ideas of the 19th century are but two expressions of the same feelings, the same longings and the same disappointments. Two colours, red for Schumann's "Dichterliebe", blue for modern life characterize the different threads of the movie. Love today is as difficult as it was 200 years ago.
