Daniel Buren
This film about Daniel Buren, an artist who played a pioneering role for his generation, deals with the man, his trajectory, and in counterpoint, his work and writings. Though he is one of the most internationally known of French artists, the range of activities have often remained little known in his native country. The public at large only remembers his system of alternate white and colored stripes but has no knowledge of his critical and self-critical work. Using three major exhibitions of his work, the director follows Daniel Buren and traces this artist's progress. An interview conducted by Guy Tortosa with the artist at his home outside Paris provides the narrative frame. The film thus elaborates the genesis of his work and his musings on art today.
