Commis d'officeAppointed by the Court
Appointed by the court : to the courts in Grenoble, or elsewhere in France, it is the beginning of a career for the young lawyers fresh from school. A brutal apprenticeship of daily justice, the justice that punishes misdemeanors, those caught red-handed, driving without a license and petty theft. The state appointed are the guarantee society offers to every citizen, even the poorest, to a defense by a lawyer. On paper it is the right to justice for everyone and the promise of an equal defense, a minimum in a democracy. On paper... But a state appointed lawyer has 10 minutes to become familar with a case and 10 minutes to meet with his client. He must improvise a defense before going to the "flags" (the immediate hearing) the same afternoon. Emergency justice, theatre of human drama, expeditive justice when hearings follow one after the other. "It's better to steal 3 million francs from a company than to pinch a handbag...", says a judge. Those appointed by the state develop their first arms in a context where rapid coercion often replaces a preferably more attentive justice.
