This film about the Italian immigration in France between 1922 and 1945 gives the floor to antifascist militants. The rise of fascism in Italy, the Spanish civil war, World War II : Nella, Damo, Carlo and the others represent those who, during these dark hours of European history, fought fascism and opted for the painful choices of exile and resistance. These testimonies are interwoven with archival footage, photographs and sound recordings to relate the historic events that determined the path of these opponents. This inquiry reveals the fundamental role of communist ideology : if some witnesses experienced it almost as a religion, others adhered because it represented the only concrete and organized alternative to fascist oppression.
