CathédralesCathedrals
The latter part of the 12th century is witness to an increasing number of religious buildings - the cathedrals - in the northern part of France. This frenetic construction work is proof of the growing ambition of the bishops and the clergy. The cathedrals are the principal churches of the diocese, planted right in the middle of the townships, reaching towards the sky. The rich citizens of the towns fully understand what is at stake and contribute to their financing. In a period spanning only two centuries, eighty cathedrals have been built. The “fashion” rapidly spreads across the rest of the country and all over Europe. But what has triggered this construction fever ?
