Carla Bley
You only have to see her at her piano or at the head of an orchestra to understand. She has a beauty, a sense of humor and a talent that are so rare and original. The very symbol of the woman musician. As a child, she would listen to her father, who would have his students practice their scales. "They gave me a inclination for bizarre notes", she would say. At 17, she was hired as a "cigarette girl" at the Blue Note in New York where she met her first husband, Paul Bley. She wrote him seven songs, among them "Ida Lupino" (a tribute to the film actress). Today, Bley still calls her compositions "inevitable". Her second husband, composer Michael Mantler, like her first husband, recognizes her wonderful gifts. There is also Steve Swallow, an omnipresent man in Carla's life.
