Canta Angola
A panorama of contemporary trends in popular music in Angola. Here musicians resist war, recession, social violence and despair. They express the plurality of Angolan identity, which is the result of various influences. Heirs to a very rich musical tradition, these musicians display an individual personality and talent. They draw on their various traditions to create new styles, which reflect the many facets of their country. The dances of Luanda, the kimbundu, bakongo and ovimbundu ballads and forms of modern urban music, born in the crucible of patrimonial rhythms and contemporary technologies, make up the many forms of expression of a nation that has survived forty years of war. The musicians of Angola give voice to a nation which believes in the future. Their music is a reflection of the sensibility and the life of the Angolan people. In counterpoint to the plunder, the widespread destruction, the provocative violence and the cynicism, the music embodies the festive spirit, physical grace and feeling.
