The Devil

First, a brief reportage on traditional infanticide in north Benin. Many infants, including those born in breech position or by caesarean, are considered witches and put to death. Then, a story, The Devil, about a young villager named Bibata, who is turned out by her father because she is pregnant from a man whose identity she won't reveal. She does not want the child, and vainly tries to abort. Then, after the delivery, she abandons her baby in a dump. The child is rescued by passersby and entrusted to an adoption service. A European couple wants to adopt the baby, but Bibata now decides she wants her infant back.
