Bérénice
Antiochus, best friend and comrade-in-arms to Titus, has come to bid Berenice farewell before returning to Palestine. She obliges him to reveal the reason for his sudden departure. He confesses that he has loved her for the past five years. Swearing him to silence, she accepts his departure. For it is on this very day that Titus must render official their relationship and ask her to be his empress. But the loyal Arsace reveals to Titus that under Roman law, he cannot wed a non-Roman woman. Berenice is a foreigner... "Berenice" is a tragedy in which Racine's art finds its expression in the anticipation of avowals and farewells. It is an inner drama fully rendered by this adaptation, thanks to the fluidity of the camera. By filming the actors in close quarters, the director probes the privacy of the characters, apprehends their torment and intensifies certain moments of the drama when destiny seems imminent. To respect Racine's style, a few slight modifications were made to the original play text for the needs of the TV screen. Out of a concern to preserve the authenticity of the historical reconstitution, the director has re-set the action in a Roman villa and dressed the cast in period costumes.
