Automat Kalashnikov
In October 1941, during World War II, Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov was recovering from wounds when he first conceived the AK-47. The Germans were then killing Russians with Schmeissers. Devising an automatic assault rifle became his aim in life. Easy to handle, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, formidably efficient, the "Kalash" which was adopted by the Red Army in 1948, escaped the control of its brilliant inventor. In half a century, this weapon, which has been sold in more than 100 million models, has been used in all military conflicts, especially in the Third world, and today arms the gangs of the streets of San Francisco. Now 80, Mikhail Kalashnikov lives in Izhevsk, capital of the Udmurtiya Republic, which as the center of the Russian armament industry remained off-limits to foreigners until 1992.
