Ache Lhamo
For several weeks, more than 40 artists, boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 73, are to tour for the first time in their lives in Sikkim, a province deep in northern India, near the Tibetan border. All are of Tibetan origins, most are refugees, the rest were born in exile. They are to act and sing for thousands of Tibetan refugees who, in cities, villages and encampments, have settled on this side of the Himalayas. As part of the TIPA (Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts), which is based in Dharamsala under the Dalai Lama's protection, they are the last guardians of a unique form of theatrical expression, the "Ache Lhamo", Tibetan opera. Blending the sacred and the profane, the Ache Lhamo is the last living form of Tibetan artistic expression in which thousands of exiled Tibetans can identify.
