It's Fadinard's wedding day but he's cursed by bad luck: his horse has eaten a straw hat hanging from a branch. The hat belongs to Anaïde, a young wife who left it there to frolic with her lover in the bushes. Anaïde cannot go home without the hat, for fear of awakening the suspicions of her jealous husband. So Fadinard, threatened with a duel by her lover, has only an hour to find a new, identical hat. Of course, the hat is a rare item. He vainly rushes around town, all day long. Fadinard's search finally ends... in the most unexpected manner.
