Typhoontschik, a Portrait of Natalia Gutman
Not merely a portrait of the Russian cellist, this film introduces us to a Natalia Gutman forever divided between her family life - she is the mother of three children, all violinists - and her devotion to music. During a long interview interwoven with archival footage and excerpts from her rehearsals and concerts, Gutman talks about her traditional Russian training with such masters as Mstislav Rostropovitch, her artistic life alongside such famed performers as Oleg Kagan, her companion, Sviatoslav Richter, and the many composers who have written for her, among them Schnittke, who dedicated his magnificent sonata for cello to her. We also see her during her master classes with young students, at the festival in Kreuth, Germany, which she founded, and where she invites young musicians to perform alongside such great names as Yuri Bashmet, Victor Tretiakov, Evgeni Kissin and many others.
