Terre des Roms
On October 5, 1999, Belgium expelled 74 Slovakian gypsies whose requests for political asylum had been denied. A few days later, a team from L'Hebdo, the RTBF news magazine, traced them to Kosice, Slovakia's second largest city. Their living conditions are unimaginable. Whether they live in the urban ghettos or in the villages, the gypsies - the Roms, as they call themselves - are clearly considered by the "white" Slovaks as outcasts. They are the victims of all prejudices, who have no hope of finding work or giving their children a decent education. An example of ordinary racism in a country that has had difficulty rising from the ashes of communism.
