Strange Justice
In the summer of 1991, the legendary U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall announces his retirement from the bench. Immediately after nominating the relatively unknown African-American conservative Clarence Thomas to succeed him, George Bush’s administration launches a lobbying offensive to ensure his confirmation. Meanwhile, in the Democratic camp, rumors of Thomas’ treatment of a former employee, now a law professor in Oklahoma, are dismissed until Anita Hill agrees to travel to Washington to publicly give a statement at the confirmation hearings. The nation watches via live television coverage as Anita Hill explains her former supervisor’s harassing and embarrassing treatment of her. Thomas’ rebuttal is a blanket denial. In a short time and by a very narrow margin, the Senate votes to confirm Thomas to the Supreme Court. As a dejected Anita Hill returns home, the term "sexual harassment" is added to the American vocabulary and the behavioral guidelines of the work place are changed forever.
