Schoolgirl Killer

Fourteen year old Aberash was on her way to school when she was abducted by a gang of horsemen, taken to a hideaway, beaten and raped. In Southern Ethiopia, this is traditionally how men acquire wives. Aberash’s older sister was also abducted, just before she was to represent her country at the Olympics. She now lives with her abductor “husband” and their four children in a mud hovel where she scrapes a living by brewing and selling liquor. Aberash’s younger sister expects to be abducted before her fifteen birthday. So Aberash’s abduction was nothing unusual, just part of an accepted, ancient cultural pattern. Except that she stole her abductor’s gun and ran away. When he gave chase, she fired – and killed him. According to regional custom, Aberash should have had her throat cut over her husband corpse. But she was rescued by local militia. Her case was taken up by Ethiopia’s first ever group of women lawyers.
