Satolas - TGV, un monument à la campagneMonument in the Country
Completed in 1994 in time for the Olympic Games in Albertville, the TGV rail station at Satolas links the TGV high-speed-rail network to Lyon airport. Unlike the "rail terminals" of last century, Satolas is conceived as an interchange point in the middle of the countryside. Built by Santiago Calatrava, it is a major facility in its vast proportions as well as in the technical and functional requirements it must satisfy. Yet above the concrete infrastructure of platforms, tracks and sidetracks, there rises an astonishing superstructure of aluminium-encased steel - the station's main hall, the monumental and symbolic part of the construction - with its two enormous outspread wings, reminiscent of a bird, a manta ray or a paper cutout. There's always irony involved in the work of the Spanish architect.
