Riopelle
At the age of thirty, Jean-Paul Riopelle was a celebrity in postwar bohemian Paris. Late in life, he withdrew to a mastless sailboat in the middle of the St. Lawrence River to paint with aerosol cans. Ever modern, he was a man in step with the times. His was a life of passions, ravenously devoured to drown out memories and flee the passing of time. Riopelle knew neither god nor master nor any devotion other than painting and living life to the fullest, uninhibited and surrounded by friends. One cannot portray a free man by pegging him to an era, or represent a rebel in halftones, or depict passion without taking risks. To capture the full measure of the man and the provocative power of his work, director Pierre Houle freely juxtaposes periods, events and canvases in a stunning work that recalls Riopelle's grand mosaic style.
