Mémoire indigène
At what moment does memory manifest itself, when power seeks to suppress it? We are in the Chiapas, one of the most beautiful regions in Mexico. Not far from San Cristobal de las Casas, the natives are being massacred by paramilitary troops in Acteal. This film is the record of a bond that, for the past 500 years, has survived wars and massacres. The dignity of the natives upsets miserabilist convention, coming down through history in the hope of renewal. Recognition of a people and its culture lies at the heart of the Indians' resistance. Their rights are still not recognized, their land is taken away from them by force. Why? Survivors of the Acteal massacre, Indian women who fight for their Mayan culture, Zapatists... All speak of the meaning of their struggle. Mémoire indigène retraces the history of a resistance movement that underpins the survival of an entire people.
