Marriage
In the agricultural society of China in the past 2,000 years, the custom of marriage followed strictly six formal rituals: marriage proposal, negotiation, engagement, ritual for obtaining the birth-date of the engaged to confirm the marital relationship, fortune-telling for the best wedding date, and finally wedding ceremony. Each of these rituals would offer a chance for lavish feasting and betrothal-gift bargaining. During 1997 and early 1998, the film crew had a chance to trace and file such a practice in two marriage cases in a remote mountainous area in Southwest China, one involving a bride to settle down in her groom’s family, while the other, a man in his bride’s…
