Located only 40 miles southwest of Moorea, the isle of Maïao — 3.7 miles in diameter — is isolated from the rest of the archipelago of French Polynesia. According to a 1932 decree, promulgated after an unfortunate incident on Maïao, the Governor of French Polynesia could expel within 24 hours "any foreigner who behaved in a way offensive to the population" . Though the decree was repealed years ago, it has remained engraved in the minds of the people of Maïao.
