Madrugadas
On the night of April 24, 1999, "Madrugada" (Dawn) was performed on Lisbon's Commerce Square by the "Theatre o bando". The production was commissioned by the city to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Revolution of Flowers. That night, Commerce Square became a vast stage echoing with the movement of vehicles and theater troupes embodying the people and the clandestine groups of political activists. All over the square, b/w images of the world and Portugal during the 50 year dictatorship were projected on the building facades. The music suddenly grows tense, and leaflets calling for rebellion flood the square. To the west, the dark sun of oppression is setting. It is April 25, midnight... An explosion of color fills the square as thousands of flags are suddenly unfurled. The people pour into the street to celebrate their new-found liberty...
