Les Derniers MaharajasThe Last Maharajas
1 - The Land of Kings 2 - Towards a New World Idealized by popular tradition, the Maharajas were the force behind Indian geopolitics for more than 2 000 years. In 1971, their privileges were definitively taken away. Although their titles now have no official weight, most are still seen by "their" people as "their" Maharaja. At the crossroads of the sacred and profane, through ceremonies, festivals and audiences identical to those overseen by their ancestors, they come across, more than ever, as the protectors or even as the earthly incarnation of Rama and Krishna... In the rural areas of India, they provide the link between the government and the people, and a balance between contemporary society and Indian spirituality. This film is a journey to the heart of the lives of the Maharajas, the diversity of whose approach builds a portrait of India caught between tradition and modernity.
