Le Cinéma britannique aujourd'huiBritish Cinema Today
In its very diversity, British cinema continues to mine a tradition of social realism, blending emotion and humor. It all began in the mid-80s with a TV film that became a theatrical sleeper hit, My Beautiful Laundrette. Since then, the "renaissance" of the British cinema has been constantly in the news, thanks to the appeal of Ken Loach's films throughout Europe, and the international career of Stephen Frears, the success of such films as Secrets and Lies, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Brassed Off, Trainspotting and The Full Monty. In this landscape, there is even room for the eccentric gifts of a Peter Greenaway. But all these initiatives are often the result of maverick initiatives. In its own land, the British cinema finds it hard to find a place for itself in the face of the Hollywood juggernaut.
