Imagine composing classical music on an island, a continent without symphony orchestras or audiences. That is what musicologist and composer Vasco Martins has chosen to do. He learnt his craft in Paris and Lisbon, but it was his island, São Vicente, that fueled his musical genius. In enhancing the complex rhythms of his archipelago with Western musical traditions, this southern composer produces a green note.
