La Forêt dans la bise
Against his family's advice, Song Guoliang was the first Chinese peasant in his village to sign a "fixed-price contract." This 30-year contract allowed him to buy 33 hectares of fallow mountain land at a low price in order to reforest it. Fifteen years after signing the contract, Song came to a glum realization about Chinese mentalities. The economic system based on short term profitability and the quest for quick gain had changed the courageous spirit and sense of solidarity of people in the region. For economic and ethical reasons, Song decided to give up his trees to the new owners of the mountain, a bee-keeper and his two sons, who decided to invest in a sawmill. Despite his deep disappointment, Song began a new reforestation project on another mountain in the region in the spring of 1998.
