L'Oubli impossibleThe Impossible Forgetting
Ain-El-Héloué is probably the most important of the 13 Palestinian refugee camps to be found in Lebanon. Since the arrival of the first refugees in 1948, the tents and huts soon gave way to a concrete town built in urgency and uncertainty. Some 50,000 people live here. Other camps are to be found in two neighboring countries, Jordan and Syria. On the whole, they include as many as 700,000 refugees. They have been waiting for 50 years to return to their country. At Ain-El-Héloué, Racha, a 24 year-old-young woman, and three generations bear witness. Theirs are the memories of the lost land, yet one so near, less than 20 miles away. They bear witness to the refugees' harsh daily life, full of humiliation and oblivion. Old and young alike embody the desire, the dream of returning to their Promised Land.
