L'Oeil du Consul
An inconspicuous French Consul in China, Auguste François, made the front cover of the French magazine, L'Illustration, on June 30, 1900, when he saved a handful of Frenchmen during the Boxer Rebellion. His story affords a glimpse into colonial China at the turn of the century. The Consul was at once spectator, protagonist and commentator. His Chinese adventures, related with humor in his correspondence and diary, are illustrated by photos and rare films he personally shot with a camera borrowed from the Lumière brothers.
