L'Évangile selon les Papous

The Huli tribe is one of the 900 tribes of Papua New Guinea. They live in one of the more remote parts of the island and saw the first Whites, Methodist missionaries, arrive in 1955. Since then, these missionaries have had to compete with other churches to convert the most Papuans possible. If the women see baptism as a way of enjoying new recognition, the same is not true for the men. For them, baptism means giving up polygamy, tribal warfare and most of their traditions. The missionaries are on the verge of convincing the last hold-outs, by announcing the second coming of Christ, the Antichrist and the Last Judgment for the end of this millennium. The film follows Ghini and other old warriors who, under pressure from the missionaries, have destroyed the house of the ancestors and built a church in its place. They have also decided to be baptised on Christmas Day.
