L'Aigle et le SphinxThe Eagle and the Sphinx
To recreate Bonaparte's Egyptian expedition, this film employs sophisticated digital technology which allows, on the one hand, to use documents in a new way, and, on the other, to summon up new images of Bonaparte's army in Egypt. 200 famous engravings of the description of Egypt were colorized, rendered into 3-D, then animated by replacing illustrated characters by real personages who come to life in late 18th century engravings. The rest of the film uses real footage of a special kind. Three weeks of shooting in Egypt were necessary to film all the sites of the expedition, the deserted settings, in which have been superimposed soldiers and Mamelukes, filmed in the studio, in Malta or in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Each shot required from 10 to 30 different sources of images which overlap to produce invisible effects. Jacques Barsac
