On a foggy night in St.Petersburg in the late 1760's, a shabby-looking balladeer lights up his metal lantern and starts to tell the sad story of one Ksenia Grigorjevna Petrovna. She is a court singer, the wife of a knighted colonel and the secret mistress of Prince Orlov. However, the facade of her life crumbles and, suddenly, she is earning her meagre living at the streets, by singing the court songs she still can remember. But the singer intervenes the real Ksenia's life and half-accidentally causes her tragic death. And a new story of Ksenia, the Saint, is born.
