Hombres hicotea, hombres tortuga
The hicotea tortoise has always been the basic food of the inhabitants of the great swamp region of northwest Colombia. Like the tortoise, man had to adapt to the harsh climate. "Hombres hicotea" was the nickname given to the people of this region by the French explorer and scientist Louis Stiffler. He shared their lives for 40 years during the second half of the 19th century. He recorded the collective memory of the Sinù, a pre-Colombian nation of engineers, silversmiths and farmers. This film recreates the memoirs of Louis Stiffler, published in 1896, using documentary footage of the region in which the descendants of the Sinù still live with the beliefs, folklore, crafts, and customs passed down from their ancestors. Today this culture and the natural environment resist as best they can the violence and ecological aggressions.
