Femmes du jazz
In April 1999, percussionist Susie Ibarra organized a "Women's Jazz Month in New York", in collaboration with the Tonic Bar. We used the occasion to film some 20 women musicians, some well known, others less so, who set out to brave the New York jungle and make a name for themselves in the Jazz Hall of Fame. This group portrait deals with the special relationship between women and jazz. Because of the variety of instruments they play, because of their clear affirmation, or, inversely, their fierce denial of a female stance in their music, the musicians we met, both veterans and newcomers to the New York scene, are representative of our theme: the place and role of women in contemporary jazz.
