Det Kinesiske HospitaletThe Chinese Hospice
The only hospice in China where terminally ill patients can die with dignity exists in Beijing. It was opened in 1990 by Dr Li Wei, who was "a barefoot doctor" in the countryside during Mao's Cultural Revolution. We meet a 78-year-old teacher who was brutally beaten during the Revolution, retrace the war with Japan, Mao's misguided agricultural experiment, the "Great Leap Forward," in which an estimated 30 million people starved to death. The Chinese Hospice is a documentary about the violent upheavals that have shaken China throughout the century. It retraces events in a country and a people who have made the transition from repressive Communism to a market economy in the course of a mere twenty years.
