Der var så mange glæderSo Many Joys
Former ambassador's wife Juliette Hessellund is old now. She can't cope in her cottage in a southern Danish harbour town, and has to go into a rest home. Worst of all, she has to leave her son, 44 year old Poul, who has Down's syndrome. She will have to give up her role as protective mother, and her son will have to get by without her. What is it like when other people take over a responsibility she has borne for so many years ? Her other son Peter, a successful New York attorney, pays a quick visit to the town to persuade his mother that the move to the rest home is the best option for her. She is a strong personality with a will of her own, and an eventful life behind her. She lost her parents in a drowning tragedy, but good fortune smiled on her when she met her beloved husband, who took her to the highest circles as ambassador to the United States of America. His loss, many years ago, remains her greatest sorrow.
