Dakar, quand les génies se fâchentDakar, When the Spirits Get Angry
The most spectacular rite in Africa is one that takes place over five days and five nights in the suburbs of Dakar, the capital of Senegal. Known as the N'Doep, it is a magical ceremony for the purpose of curing madness, practiced by one of the country's smaller ethnic groups, the Lébous. The ceremony takes place in the compound of the patient's family. The condition is diagnosed when a member of the family shows abnormal behavior of a clearly delineated nature : chills, melancholy, loss of appetite and extreme passivity. These cases of African style depression do not respond to treatment by antidepressants. Doctors trained in Western medicine are quite willing to turn them over to traditional healers, in this case women healers, for the N'Doep ritual is carried out exclusively by women.
