Bibliothèques sous influence

Libraries Under the Influence

An inquiry into the public libraries in those southern French cities governed by mayors of the far-right National Front party who have taken their combat into the field of culture. "Do you have a basic understanding of this hatred?" Martine Pichon (the film's protagonist): "No, I still haven't... except... what I have understood is how much the elected officials affect our daily lives and... I think they're people who don't like people, because, if you like books, you automatically like people. So they're not people who like others." From 1994 to 1997, Martine Pichon was head librarian at Marignane, one of the four cities with National Front mayors. This film tells how authorities of this city appropriated the municipal library. It also relates meetings with townspeople, writers and poets who have been fighting back and who have another vision of life.
