Bella di notteNight Reverie
The Galleria Borghese was built to house the rare collections of sculptures and paintings owned by Cardinal Spicione Borghese, a descendant of Pope Paul V. Visiting the Galleria is like going on a journey that symbolizes the contrast between life and death, ancient and modern, which is compared by contrasting opposites : light and dark, day and night, knowledge and ignorance. The journey takes you from night to day, from the dark to the light of research and knowledge, reason and culture. The works of the past become "current" but return to the dark when the visitor leaves. They are symbolic of the eternal contrast between Eros and Thanatos.
