Au nom de la coca

Coca and the drug traffic represent at least $650 million in annual revenues for the Bolivian economy. At the urging of the United States, which has been unable to curb their domestic cocaine problem, the Bolivian government has declared war on illegal coca production. As compensation, the government has promised a $25,000 bonus for each hectare of coca destroyed. But barely 10% of this money is said to have been really invested in worthy projects. What is more, the experiments in alternative crops have met with little success to date, for lack of a foreign market. As a result, the region of Chaparé, in the Amazon forest, has become the site of continuing clashes between the army and the "cocaleros", who are opposed to the forced destruction of their coca fields.
