Anita Garibaldi
To Brazilians and Italians, Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro, better known as Anita Garibaldi (1821-1849) was a legendary figure, even if her life remains rather obscure. With her second husband, Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), the Italian patriot and revolutionary who lived in exile in Brazil between 1835 and 1872, this poor, illiterate young woman took up arms against the soldiers of a decadent Brazilian empire for the autonomy of her region in the south, during the famous Farroupilha Revolution (1835 -1845). Owing to the lack of serious documentation about her, Paulo Markun decided to make this documentary. With the assistance of 15 researchers, he scoured forgotten archives in the United States, Italy, France and Uruguay. Thanks to the enthusiasts of this legendary woman, more than 500 photographs, paintings and illustrations were unearthed.
