To encourage young European citizens to take a personal stance on current affairs, and to open a dialogue about representations of contemporary societies, Fipa created a Young Europeans Jury in 2002. In this way, the festival is able to raise awareness of our political, economic, or social environments in this open-minded and curious age group that is keen to discover new perspectives on the world.
Every year, Fipa gives 13 French-speaking, 15-17 year-old high school students from the European Union a chance to sit on the Young European Jury. With the patronage of a well-known figure from the audiovisual industry, these young jury members award a production in the competitive “Reportages and Current Affairs” category. In 2004, eligibility for the Young Europeans Jury was extended to candidates from the 10 new European Union member states (Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Slovenia). Now, to celebrate the 10th edition of the Young Europeans Jury, Fipa is looking to the future by inviting high school students from nine European countries that are currently candidates to join the European Union: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Iceland, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Turkey. In 2010, the Young Europeans Jury is placed under the aegis of Philippe Dessaint, journalist for TV5 Monde.
