Passeport Classes
Since 2002, in partnership with the Bordeaux Rectorat, the Fipa has hosted several "Passport Classes" - a one-day programme dedicated to the schools affiliated with the Bordeaux Academy. Schools attending the Fipa:
France 5 Master-class: The Tunnel Dwellers of New York Seven years after 9/11 and the police "clean up" of the network of underground tunnels in New York City, Chantal Lasbats offers us a documentary on life underground in the Big Apple, telling us of the life of the hundreds of people who still live in these tunnels. A journey through another New York. Under the city there are 18 different levels and 468 subway stations open or abandoned, a labyrinth of corridors and miles of disused tunnels. Men and women take refuge here in the bowels of the city, creeping and crawling around, they survive in these spaces. In order to meet them, the director has climbed down forgotten stairways, opened railings and slipped down holes into the darkness, always descending. She spent a whole year meeting these people guided through this maze of corridors, some of which are more than 30 meters underground, by the photographer Steve Duncan, who knows these forbidden areas like the back of his hand. She learned how to tame these underground people, some of whom have been there 30 years. They are a legendary species, known as “the moles”: the forgotten people of the American dream. The master class is split into three sections: after the projection of the documentary The Tunnel Dwellers of New York (52 min), we are invited to analyse the different narrative voices (the use of the narrator’s voice and the voices of those on screen) and the photography. This session will be completed by a discussion with the director and the producer who tell us of their approach and their preconceptions, also a representative of France 5 will discuss the educational aspects and the assistance given to the project. |
